The road to Peoria and a Class 2A state basketball title runs through Chester where the Pinckneyville Panthers open regional play Feb. 22. The Panthers face the host team Yellow Jackets for the second time in three days. Pinckneyville throttled Chester 85-48 Friday night to wind up 22-5 during the regular season. Signs of encouragement like these popped up on Water Street over the weekend. Check with the Post later this evening for pictures and a recap of the game.

The Perry County Sportsmans' Club, quiet the past couple of years, is making noise again. The group recently held a meat shoot and has two more planned -- a shotgun competition Feb. 28th and a .22 calibre event March 14th -- at its clubhouse on White Walnut Road immediately north of Bowl's Bottom Road. The money raised at these events funds its annual Kids' Fishing Day (set for May 16th) as well as dispersed to other non-profit organizations to promote conservation and safe hunting practices. Keep abreast of other group-sponsored activities by becoming a fan of it on Facebook.
The PCHS poms took home three first place awards at the Illinois Drill Team Association Benton regional Saturday. The team won in Class A Pom, Lyrical and Kick categories. Each performance was also state-qualifying worthy. This is the last competition before the team heads to the state tournament in Urbana in March. For more pictures click on the image.
The PCHS sophomores drubbed Herrin 57-38 at Thomas Gym Feb. 18. The frosh team didn't fare as well. View more pictures by clicking on the image.

Sugar asked: "Will these snows ever end." Trigger responded, "Why are you asking me I'm a freakin' horse?"

Frigid temperatures, gusting winds and drifting snows made a lot of Southern Illinoisans pine for those steamy summer days when we can complain that we can't wait for winter. Be careful what you wish for.

What a difference a day makes. After only able to muster 38 points against Nashville on Friday, the Pinckneyville Panthers came out with a scoring vengenance Saturday with an 88-55 shelling of Chester. The Yellowjackets kept it close in the first half but the second half was all Pinckneyville. The PCHS Pom Pons took home two first place trophies and qualified for state in three events at the I.D.T.A. Regional Competition. The team won the event's Class A "Kick" and "Pom" category. While it didn't place in "Lyrical" it did tally enough point to enable it compete in that category at state next month. Jamie Maxie was also one of seven girls at the competition to be awarded the "Rising Star" medal. Click on the image for more pictures.
