Step into Waller's Market in Lively Grove (Ill. 153 north of Coulterville) and take a step back in time. Waller's sells everything from canned goods to mops and brooms but the focus here is the butcher shop. Owner Dave Waller slices meat to order and wraps it in waxed paper bound with a string. The store's roots date back to the early 1900s and it has been in the Waller family since 1960. Dave and his sisters Marilyn and Donna are there every day serving locals, the workforce at the Prairie State power plant construction site and drop-ins who enjoy experiencing a slice of Americana. Generations of Pinckneyville youth have fond memories of the lazy days of summer spent playing sandlot ball at Zacher's Field. Sometimes neighborhood teams would face-off against crosstown rivals. Other times, friendly pickup games would arise. Shown here is a group of 20-somethings continuing a summer-long battle of "Tennis Ball." For more Zacher's Field pictures go to Snapshots and click on Member Pictures. If you have pictures of Pinckneyville folks enjoying the summer, post them on this site for all to see.
