Piney Creek Ravine is a little-known natural treasure less than a 45 minute drive from Pinckneyville. The 198-acre site was purchased by the state of Illinois in 1972 for its rare plant species, stunning geological features and archeological attributes. It’s one of only two places in Illinois to find short-leaf pines growing naturally. Along its moderately difficult trail one will find ferns, sedge, buttercups and American agave. Prehistoric rock art (petroglyphs) dating back to 500 A.D. are also found there. The site is located southwest of Shiloh Hill.
